THCA, defined
THCA is tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. It is the acid form of THC. A living cannabis plant makes THCA, not THC. The compound forms in the trichomes, the resin glands on the flower. Its formula is C22H30O4 and its molecular weight is 358.5 g/mol.
Raw flower holds the most THCA. Drying, curing, and storage cut the amount.
THCA does not cause a high
The high from cannabis comes from THC. THC binds CB1 receptors in the brain. THCA binds those receptors with low affinity. A person who eats raw cannabis flower gets little or no psychoactive effect. That holds even at high THCA content.

Heat converts THCA to THC
A reaction called decarboxylation removes a carboxyl group from THCA. What remains is THC. The reaction starts near 90 to 105 C (194 to 220 F). It runs to completion near 145 C (293 F).
Smoking, vaping, dabbing, and baking all supply that heat. A lit joint decarboxylates THCA as it burns. This is why raw flower and heated flower act like different products.
What THCA does in the body
Researchers have tested THCA in cells and in rodents. Reported effects include:
- Lower inflammation in some cell and mouse models.
- Reduced nausea and vomiting in animal studies.
- Nerve cell protection in lab models of neurodegeneration.
- Reduced appetite in one rodent study.
Human data is thin. Most published work stops at the lab or animal stage. Treat health claims as unproven.
Legal status in the US
The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp. Hemp is cannabis with 0.3 percent or less delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. The law names delta-9 THC. It does not name THCA. That gap let sellers ship THCA flower into states with no medical or adult-use program.
States have since passed their own limits. Rules differ by state and change during legislative sessions. Check state law before buying or shipping.
How to read a THCA label
Lab reports list THCA and delta-9 THC as separate numbers. Total THC uses this formula: delta-9 THC + (THCA x 0.877). The 0.877 factor accounts for the mass lost as carbon dioxide during decarboxylation. A certificate of analysis (COA) from a third-party lab shows these values.
Why THCA sells
THCA flower reaches buyers through smoke shops, gas stations, and mail order. No dispensary visit is needed in most cases. Ease of access drives sales more than chemistry does. The product still converts to THC when heated.
