What THCA is

THCA is tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. It is the form of THC that grows in the cannabis plant. A live plant holds little delta-9 THC. Most of the THC family sits in the acid form until harvest and cure. Hemp flower labeled 20% THCA holds 0.3% or less delta-9 THC by dry weight. That ratio is the reason the flower can be sold as hemp.

Why the acid form does not bind CB1

THCA carries a carboxyl group on the molecule. That group changes the shape and blocks a strong fit at the CB1 receptor. THC binds CB1 as a partial agonist. THCA shows weak binding in receptor assays. Without CB1 activation at a useful level, there is no high.

What heat does

Decarboxylation removes the carboxyl group and releases carbon dioxide. The reaction starts near 105 C (221 F) and speeds up above 120 C (248 F). Smoking, vaping, dabbing, and baking all pass that point. A joint cherry burns at 600 C to 900 C (1,100 F to 1,650 F). The THCA in the flower becomes THC before the smoke reaches your mouth.

Conversion is not complete. Heat destroys some THC. Sidestream smoke carries more away. A smoker takes in a fraction of the THC the label predicts. The exact share depends on the device, the draw, and the flower.

Federal law sets hemp at 0.3% delta-9 THC or less on a dry weight basis. THCA is a separate molecule. Labs test the sample before any heat is applied. A jar can list 25% THCA and 0.2% delta-9 THC. The buyer then lights it. The chemistry changes at ignition. Several states now count total THC, THCA included, in their own hemp rules.

Effects reported without heat

Animal and cell studies describe anti-inflammatory and antiemetic activity for THCA. Human evidence is early and small. None of this work reports a psychoactive effect.

Storage changes the number

THCA shifts to THC over time. Heat, light, and air speed the shift. A jar stored in a warm car can test above its label weeks later. The lab result describes the sample on test day, not the product on sale day.
