How to Use THCA
THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the acid form of THC found in raw cannabis. It does not activate CB1 receptors the way THC does, so eating raw THCA does not produce a high. Heat removes a carboxyl group and converts THCA to THC. That step is called decarboxylation. Anyone who wants THC effects from THCA has to add heat, with a lighter, a vaporizer, or an oven. Anyone who wants THCA's own effects takes it cold: raw flower, juice, capsules, or sublingual oil.
Forms of THCA
- Raw flower, unheated.
- THCA isolate powder, about 98% purity or higher.
- Cold-pressed juice from fresh cannabis leaves.
- Tinctures and capsules, unheated.
- THCA flower sold in hemp retail.
Decarboxylation temperatures
Conversion starts near 200 F (93 C). Full conversion takes about 30 to 60 minutes at 220 to 240 F (105 to 115 C). Above 300 F, THC degrades into CBN. Oven time depends on moisture and bud density. Moist flower takes longer than dry flower.
what is thca and what does it do
Ways to use it
- Vaporize at 315 to 450 F. Heat converts THCA to THC in the vapor path.
- Dab THCA isolate or THCA diamonds. Low temperatures preserve flavor and limit CBN loss.
- Smoke flower. Combustion above 450 F destroys part of the THC.
- Eat raw flower or take capsules for THCA alone, with no high.
- Bake into edibles only after decarboxylation. A lipid such as butter or oil carries the THC.
Dosing
Oral THCA bioavailability in humans is not well measured. Start with 5 to 10 mg of THCA and wait two hours before taking more. Inhaled THCA acts within minutes because heat converts it to THC during use. Product labels list THCA milligrams and delta-9 THC content as two separate numbers. Read both.
Storage
THCA converts to THC with heat, light, and time. Store product in an airtight container, in the dark, below 77 F (25 C). Refrigeration slows conversion. Flower kept in a hot car for a week will test higher in THC and lower in THCA.
Legal status
Federal law sets a 0.3% delta-9 THC limit by dry weight for hemp. THCA is not part of that number until it is heated. Some states now count total THC after decarboxylation, and some have banned THCA products. State rules changed in several states in 2024 and 2025. Check state law before buying or traveling with product.
What the evidence shows
Most THCA research is lab and animal work. Reported targets include inflammation, nausea, and nerve cell protection. Human trials are few. Evidence for THCA as a treatment in people is limited. This is not medical advice.
