Running cost
A 100W lamp on 18 hours uses 1.8 kilowatt-hours per day. At 16 cents per kilowatt-hour that is $0.29 per day, or about $8.70 per month. Switching to 12 hours for flower drops it to $0.19 per day, or $5.80 per month. A four-bulb build draws about 60 watts and costs about $5 per month at 18 hours.
What the lean setup leaves out
- Grow tent: $60 to $120. A closet works, but light leaks out and odor leaks in.
- Inline fan and carbon filter: $60 to $120.
- Ducting and clamps: $10 to $20.
- Drying rack and jars: $20 to $40.
- Humidity and temperature meter: $10 to $20.
These items add $160 to $320. They matter for odor control, for a sealed room, and for a large plant. One plant in a closet does not need all of them.
Yield and space
A 100W LED in a 2 by 2 foot space yields 1 to 3 ounces per plant for a first grow. A four-bulb build yields less. Outdoor plants in a 10 gallon pot yield more, up to several ounces. Yield follows light, pot size, and genetics more than it follows money spent on bottles.
Where the total moves
Three things change the number. First, kits and bundles add $50 to $150 for the same parts. Second, seed prices vary by breeder and by state. Third, electricity rates range from under 12 cents per kilowatt-hour in some states to over 30 cents in Hawaii.
