Oral fluid: THC enters saliva from smoke in the mouth. A swab can read positive minutes after exposure and for hours after. Labs have trouble separating passive from active use on this test.

Blood: plasma THC shows up for a few hours after heavy passive exposure. Levels sit near the limit of detection.

Hair: external smoke deposits on the strand. Labs wash samples before analysis. A confirmed hair positive from passive smoke alone is rare.

Facts that are not settled

No published dose-response curve links a smoke amount to a test result. Labs do not report passive exposure as a separate category. A positive result carries no marker that separates smoke in the air from a hit off a joint.
