Verify the Batch Before You Buy

CBD isolate is a crystalline powder. Sellers list purity between 99% and 99.9% cannabidiol. A certificate of analysis (COA) is the document that supports that number. Ask for the COA tied to the batch code on the container. A COA with no batch code says nothing about the powder in the jar.

Check five fields on the COA:

  • Laboratory name and accreditation. ISO/IEC 17025 is the standard. A2LA and ANAB publish accredited lab directories.
  • Cannabinoid profile. Isolate should show one cannabinoid. THC should read ND or below the limit of quantitation.
  • Contaminant panel. Residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, microbials, mycotoxins.
  • Method. HPLC or GC-MS. The method name belongs on the report.
  • Date. Analysis within 12 months of shipment.

Questions for the Seller

  1. What is the batch code, and can you send that COA?
  2. Which lab ran the test, and is the lab accredited?
  3. What is the THC result in percent, not just "pass"?
  4. What is the return policy if a third-party test disagrees with your COA?
  5. How is the powder sealed and shipped?

Online ordering removes the counter conversation. That speed is the risk. A retail counter lets you read the label before payment. A website lets you skip the read.

Parameters to Compare

Purity: 99% is the floor for the word isolate. Below that, the product is a distillate or a blend.

Form: isolate ships as powder, crystals, or slabs. Slabs need milling. Powder mixes into oil with less work.

THC: isolate should test at 0.0% or below the limit of quantitation. Federal hemp law sets 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis for the plant, not for the finished isolate. A seller that cites 0.3% as an isolate spec is describing a different product.

Solvent residue: ask for limits against ICH Q3C. Heavy metals: ask for limits against USP 232 and 233.

Packaging: sealed, light-blocking, with a desiccant.

Price Ranges

Prices vary by supplier and volume. Bulk isolate has traded near $0.50 to $2.00 per gram at kilogram scale. Retail packs of 1 g to 30 g list at $3 to $15 per gram. Confirm current quotes. A retail listing under $1 per gram is a flag. Ask for the COA first.

Pitfalls

  • A COA from a lab with no accreditation.
  • A COA for a different batch than the one shipped.
  • "Water-soluble isolate." Isolate is fat-soluble. Water-soluble versions are formulated products with a carrier.
  • An isolate listing paired with a full-spectrum COA.
  • Third-party tests that found synthetic cannabinoids in products sold as CBD. Buy from sellers who name the lab.
  • Purity claims with no test date.

Legal Notes

Federal law removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act in 2018. Hemp means cannabis with 0.3% THC or less on a dry weight basis. The FDA states that CBD cannot be sold as a dietary supplement and has not approved CBD for that use. State rules differ. Check your state before ordering.

Storage: keep the powder in an airtight container, away from light, heat, and moisture. Isolate is stable for long periods under those conditions.
