THC-P, short for tetrahydrocannabiphorol, is a phytocannabinoid that occurs in cannabis in trace amounts. It carries a seven-carbon alkyl side chain where delta-9 THC carries five. Those extra two carbons change how the molecule sits in the CB1 receptor, and in test-tube work THC-P binds that receptor with an affinity roughly 30 times higher than delta-9 THC. That one number is why you see it printed on vape carts and gummy jars. It is not a promise that your body will feel it 30 times stronger.
THC-P Potency Chart: Reading the Numbers Before You Buy
Where it came from
An Italian research group reported THC-P in 2019 after isolating it from Cannabis sativa. It sits alongside other minor cannabinoids that only turn up in parts per million in raw flower, which is the important part. You cannot grow, smoke, or buy enough flower to get a meaningful dose. So the commercial version is either pulled out of hemp biomass through extraction or built semi-synthetically from CBD, using a longer-chain alcohol in the conversion step. Most of what sits on a shelf today is the second kind.
What the potency number actually means
Binding affinity is measured in a dish, not in a person. There are no published human dosing studies, no pharmacokinetic profile, no clinical trials. What exists is a receptor assay and a pile of user reports saying the same few things: it feels stronger than delta-9, it lasts longer, and it gets uncomfortable fast if you take too much. Route matters more than the molecule. Inhaled THC-P arrives in minutes and fades within a few hours. Eaten THC-P can run most of an evening and into the next morning.
Why it lives in vapes and gummies
This is the part that explains the whole category. Since THC-P is present in flower at negligible levels, the only practical delivery is a concentrated product you can meter: a disposable, a cart, a gummy, a tincture dropper. Single-serve, low odor, no grinding, no prep. The format is the product, and convenience is what made THC-P a shelf name rather than a lab curiosity. It also means the label is often a blend. Many manufacturers cut THC-P with delta-8, HHC, or CBD to stretch a costly input, so the milligram figure on the package may describe a mix you cannot fully account for.
Is it legal in the US?
For years, THC-P rode the gap left by the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp derivatives as long as delta-9 THC stayed under 0.3% on a dry weight basis. THC-P is not delta-9, so it fell outside that test on a technicality. That gap is closing. Federal hemp language has been shifting toward counting total THC instead of delta-9 alone, and a growing list of states have banned THC-P by name or folded it into broader intoxicating cannabinoid laws. Check your own state before you assume the shop down the street is operating legally, because possession rules are the ones that land on you.
What a certificate of analysis covers, and what it skips
Standard potency panels are built around delta-9 THC and a short list of common cannabinoids. THC-P often is not an analyte at all, so a clean-looking COA may simply mean nobody looked. When it is tested, the method may not be validated for that molecule. Independent testing of hemp-derived cannabinoid products has repeatedly found that what is in the bottle does not match the label. Before buying, I look for the lab name, a batch number that matches the package, and a test date inside the last few months.
If you decide to try it
Treat it as an unfamiliar drug, not a stronger version of something you already know. Take the smallest unit the package offers. Inhaled, one puff, then wait fifteen minutes before deciding. Edible, wait a full two hours. Do not stack it with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or anything else that slows breathing. Keep the original packaging. If someone ends up in an emergency department, that label is the only record of what was taken, and there is no reversal agent for cannabinoid intoxication. Care is supportive: fluids, a quiet room, time.
Quick answers
- Is THC-P stronger than THC? Receptor binding says it binds tighter. Human data on subjective strength does not exist yet.
- Will it show up on a drug test? Assume yes. Most workplace screens look for THC metabolites broadly, and you do not want to gamble on a false negative.
- Hemp or marijuana? Both can contain it. Retail products are usually hemp-derived and semi-synthetic.
- How long do effects last? Inhaled, roughly two to four hours. Eaten, six hours or more.
- Is it FDA approved? No. No THC-P product has been reviewed or approved by the FDA.
