Short answer
Pick delta-9 THC if you want the compound with the most research and the tightest dosing labels. Pick delta-8 THC if you accept a lab-made compound sold outside FDA rules.
What the "D" stands for
Delta. Delta-8 THC and delta-9 THC are isomers. Both have the formula C21H30O2 and the same molecular mass. The double bond sits on carbon 8 in one and carbon 9 in the other. That single shift changes how each molecule binds CB1 receptors in the brain.
What is D Potency in Cannabis?
Delta-9 THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. Modern flower holds 15% to 30% delta-9 THC. Delta-8 THC appears in cannabis at trace levels, under 1% of dry weight. Products on shelves get delta-8 by converting CBD in a lab with acid and solvent.
Potency and timing
Delta-8 binds CB1 with lower affinity than delta-9. User reports put delta-8 effects at a fraction of delta-9 strength. No standard conversion exists. A 25 mg delta-8 gummy and a 25 mg delta-9 gummy are not equal doses.
What Is D Oil? Effects, Onset, and What to Expect
Inhaled THC reaches the blood in 2 to 10 minutes. Edibles take 30 to 90 minutes. Inhaled effects fade in 1 to 3 hours. Oral effects run 4 to 8 hours.
Legal status
Federal law caps delta-9 THC in hemp at 0.3% by dry weight. DEA calls delta-8 THC made by chemical conversion a Schedule I substance. State law splits. Some states ban delta-8 sales. Others require licenses and testing.
Options
- Delta-9 THC from a state-licensed dispensary. Flower, vape, and edibles carry THC mg per serving and batch test results.
- Delta-8 THC gummies and vape carts. Sold in smoke shops, gas stations, and online. Lab panels vary by seller.
- Hemp-derived delta-9 THC. Sold under the 0.3% rule in some states. Legal status is in flux.
Risk
FDA has approved no delta-8 product. Poison control centers log calls for delta-8 with vomiting, hallucinations, and fast heart rate. Label checks of retail delta-8 have found cannabinoid amounts that differ from the package claim.
Buying check
For delta-9, pick a dispensary that posts a batch lab report with a potency panel. For delta-8, ask for the same. The report should list delta-8 mg, delta-9 mg, residual solvents, and pesticides. If the seller has no report, do not buy.
