A one-hitter is the closest cousin, and the terms get used interchangeably. In practice, a one-hitter usually means a small bat-style pipe with a narrow bowl sized for a single hit. A chillum tends to have a wider bowl and often holds two or three hits.
A standard hand pipe differs in two ways: it has a carb hole for clearing the chamber, and its bowl sits at an angle off the main body. If you have used a spoon pipe, a chillum will feel like the stripped-down version.
Why convenience keeps winning
Most people who buy a chillum are not chasing a connoisseur experience. They want something that fits in a pocket, works in ten seconds, and does not need a grinder, a lighter technique, or a cleaning routine after every session.
That trade-off has a cost. Straight tubes collect resin in the narrowest part, and a dirty chillum tastes harsh and clogs. A quick soak in isopropyl alcohol, a pipe cleaner, and a rinse usually restores it. Clean it every few sessions rather than waiting for airflow to drop.
