How Saliva Testing Works
An oral fluid test swabs the inside of the cheek and gum line. The lab looks for delta-9-THC itself, not the metabolites that urine tests target. The parent drug clears from the mouth faster than metabolites clear from fat and urine, which is why the window is shorter. Peak levels land 30 to 60 minutes after smoking or vaping.

What Does Not Work
Mouthwash, water loading, and chewing gum only matter in the 30 minutes before a sample. They do not change the THC already in your body. Labs screen for common adulterants, and a diluted sample can be flagged as invalid, which counts the same as a positive in most workplace programs.
