Walking in without an online order is the quickest way to buy, and often the priciest. The number on the menu board is a starting point, not a checkout total. I treat any walk-in trip as two questions: what will this really cost, and is the shop open when I think it is.
Start with the register total. Legal markets stack excise tax, state sales tax, and sometimes a local add-on, so the shelf price and the receipt can differ by a wide margin. In California, retail cannabis carries a 15% excise tax on top of ordinary sales tax. Budget 25% to 35% above the sticker in most adult-use states and you will not get surprised at the counter.
Hours deserve the same suspicion. A storefront listing is the shop's own schedule, and third-party map data goes stale. Holiday weeks, inventory counts, and staffing shortages all move closing time. If you are driving more than ten minutes, check the menu or call the same day, and ask when the last sale happens. Many shops stop admitting customers 15 to 30 minutes before the posted close.

Parameters That Move the Price
- Medical vs adult-use pricing. Medical patients frequently pay a lower tax rate, but only with valid state documentation.
- Purchase limits. Daily caps are set by state law and apply across every dispensary you visit that day.
- Weight breaks. A full ounce almost always costs less per gram than an eighth, but only if you will use it.
- Payment method. Debit at the counter may carry a service fee, and ATMs on site are rarely free.
- Discount days. Loyalty programs, senior and veteran discounts, and first-visit deals usually require you to ask.
Pitfalls at the Door
- Trusting an online menu as live inventory. Listings are snapshots, and dispensaries sell out of popular strains fast.
- Assuming delivery is cheaper. Delivery adds its own fees and minimums.
- Ignoring the return policy. Most states prohibit returns once product leaves the building.
- Forgetting ID. Expired identification means no sale, no exceptions.
Do those three things, check the tax math, verify hours the same day, and ask about discounts at the counter, and a walk-in stops being a gamble.
