Short answer
A rolling tray with a compartment for cones holds pre-rolled paper cones in a recessed slot. The slot keeps the cone straight and off the tray floor while you fill it. Match slot length to cone length. Common cone lengths fall between 70 mm and 110 mm.
Cone lengths and slot sizes
- 70 mm to 75 mm: short cones, sold as mini or dogwalker.
- 84 mm: labeled 1¼ in most shops.
- 98 mm: sold as 98 special.
- 109 mm: king size. This is the longest common size.
A 109 mm cone measures 4.3 in. A cone slot needs at least 4.5 in of length to hold a full king size cone. Trays with a slot under 4 in leave the tip hanging over the edge.

Tray sizes
- Mini: 5 in x 7 in. One cone slot and a small bay for ground material.
- Standard: 7 in x 11 in. Two to four cones plus a fill area.
- Large: 11 in x 14 in. Six or more cones.
Tray walls run 0.5 in to 1.5 in high. Higher walls stop ground material from rolling off. Lower walls make the tray easier to sweep out.

Materials
- Aluminum: 0.4 lb to 0.8 lb at 7 in x 11 in. Stamped sheet metal. Light.
- Stainless steel: 1 lb to 2 lb. Resists dents.
- ABS plastic: light, molded. Slots hold their shape.
- Silicone: flexes. A cone slot in soft silicone can pinch the paper.
- Bamboo or walnut: no metal rattle. Wood absorbs resin and oil.
How to fill a cone in the slot
- Set the cone in the slot with the tip at the low end.
- Grind material to a medium grind.
- Load with a funnel or scoop. Hold the cone at 30 to 45 degrees.
- Tap the cone against the tray to settle the material.
- Pack the top 1/4 in with a poker.
- Twist the paper tip closed.
Cleaning
Metal and glass trays take 91% isopropyl alcohol and a cloth. Silicone and plastic take warm soapy water. Wood takes a dry scrape and a damp wipe. Do not soak wood. Alcohol strips the finish on painted wood trays.

What the compartment does not do
The slot does not seal against moisture. It does not measure a dose. It does not change how a cone burns. A filled cone left in an open slot picks up dust and loses moisture over 24 to 48 hours.
Checklist before you buy
- Slot length: 4.5 in or more for king size cones.
- Slot count: 1 to 6, based on how many cones you fill at one time.
- Lid: magnetic or hinged. A lid keeps cones upright in a bag.
- Second bay: for ground material, kept apart from the cone slot.
- Corners: rounded corners are easier to clean.
