Major and minor cannabinoids: the short answer

Cannabis produces more than 100 cannabinoids, but only a few ever show up in amounts worth measuring. Five earn the major label: THC, CBD, CBG, CBC, and CBN. The rest are minor, usually because the plant makes them in trace amounts or because they only appear after another compound breaks down. There is a second column to the list too. THCA, CBDA, and CBGA are the acidic forms the plant actually builds; heat or time turns them into the neutral versions most people recognize.

Why the split matters at the counter

This is a concentration story, not a marketing story. A gummy that lists six minor cannabinoids at 0.2 mg each is mostly a gummy. I check milligram totals per serving before I read the ingredient story, because that is what shapes how the product feels and how long it lasts.

The major cannabinoids

Delta-9 THC

The one that gets you high. It binds CB1 receptors in the brain and drives most of the psychoactive effects people associate with cannabis. Potency swings hard between products, so the per-serving number matters more than whatever is printed on the front of the package.

CBD

Non-intoxicating for most people. It turns up in tinctures, topicals, drinks, and capsules, often with THC stripped out or cut to trace levels. It also carries the most regulatory baggage of any cannabinoid in the US.

CBG

Often called the parent cannabinoid because CBGA sits upstream of THC and CBD in the plant's chemistry. It tends to land under 1% of total cannabinoids in dried flower, which is why CBG-forward products come from young plants or from isolate.

CBC

Present in small amounts in most cultivars. It gets attention for how it interacts with receptors beyond CB1 and CB2, though human data is thin next to THC and CBD.

CBN

Less made by the plant than left behind by it. THC oxidizes into CBN over time, which is why older flower and aged extracts carry more of it. Labels that lean on CBN for sleep usually pair it with THC or a hefty dose of CBD.

The minor cannabinoids

Acidic forms

THCA, CBDA, CBGA, CBCA, and CBNA are the raw, unheated versions. THCA does not intoxicate until it decarboxylates into delta-9 THC, which is the whole reason raw cannabis and smoked cannabis behave differently. Cold-pressed juices and raw tinctures are built around that distinction.

Rare and trace cannabinoids

  • THCV, sold as an energizing or appetite-suppressing option
  • CBDV, studied mostly around seizures and nausea
  • CBCV and CBGV, both trace-level and largely research curiosities
  • Delta-8 THC and delta-10 THC, isomers that occur naturally in tiny amounts but are usually synthesized from CBD
  • CBL, CBT, and CBE, degradation or rearrangement products found in aged extracts
  • THCP and HHCP, longer-chain or hydrogenated relatives at very low concentrations

What the list does not tell you

Two products with identical cannabinoid profiles can hit differently. Delivery format, dose, tolerance, and whether you ate first all matter. Minor cannabinoids may add to the overall effect, but the evidence for most of them in humans is early. Treat the list as a map of what is in the plant, not a promise about what it does to you.

Reading a label in under a minute

  1. Find the per-serving cannabinoid total, not the per-package number.
  2. Check whether THC is listed as delta-9, THCA, or both. Some labs convert THCA to its THC equivalent, some do not.
  3. Add up the minors. If the combined total is under a milligram or two, factor that into what you are paying.
  4. Look for a batch-specific COA with a recent date. Old tests on a fast-turnover product are a yellow flag.
