Short answer
Store cannabis wax in an airtight glass jar. Keep the jar in a dark cabinet at 60°F to 70°F. Seal it after each use. If you plan to keep the wax for more than four weeks, move the jar to a refrigerator and let it reach room temperature before you open it.

What breaks down in wax
Wax holds THC, other cannabinoids, terpenes, and traces of residual solvent. Heat, light, and oxygen degrade all of them. THC oxidizes into CBN, a cannabinoid with weaker effects. Terpenes evaporate at room temperature, which strips smell and taste. An open jar loses terpenes in hours.

Containers
- Glass. Borosilicate or amber glass with a screw lid. Glass does not bond with terpenes. Best option for storage past one week.
- Silicone. Silicone absorbs terpenes over time. Fine for a few days, poor for months.
- PTFE and FEP. PTFE-lined lids and PTFE sheets resist terpene absorption. Labs use both.
- Parchment paper. Use it as a liner inside a jar, not as a wrap. Folds trap air and stick to soft wax.
Temperature
Target 60°F to 70°F for daily use. Above 80°F, wax softens and terpenes leave the jar faster. Cabinets above a stove, windowsills, and car consoles are bad spots. A car interior hits 130°F or higher in summer.
Refrigerator: 35°F to 40°F. Use it for live resin, rosin, sauce, and jars you open less than once a week. Keep the jar on a middle shelf. The door swings in temperature each time it opens.
Freezer: 0°F. Use it for shatter and for holds past six months. Condensation is the risk. Water on the wax causes sizzle and dull flavor. Leave the sealed jar on a counter for 20 to 30 minutes before opening.
Shelf life
- Shatter: 6 to 12 months at 60°F to 70°F.
- Wax, budder, crumble: 3 to 6 months at room temperature, longer refrigerated.
- Live resin, sauce, rosin: 3 to 6 months refrigerated. High terpene content shortens the window.
- Frozen: 12 months or more for most forms.
Label dates from producers vary. State rules differ, and some jars carry no date. Write the open date on the lid.
Handling
Use a metal dab tool. Cold wax chips. Warm wax smears. Touch the wax with the tool, not your fingers. Skin oil and moisture transfer to the product. Wipe the jar rim before you close it. A dirty rim lets air in and wax sticks to the threads.
What to avoid
- Plastic baggies. Static pulls wax off the tool, and plastic is not airtight.
- Direct sun and clear jars on open shelves. UV light degrades cannabinoids.
- Warm rooms and heat vents.
- Opening the jar every day. Each cycle swaps the air inside.
