Answer first
Bubble hash is ice-water hash. It melts when you heat it. Smoke it in a pipe or bong with a screen, or in a dry herb vaporizer at 190 C to 230 C (375 F to 446 F). Full-melt grades work in a dab rig at 230 C to 290 C (446 F to 554 F). Grades below full melt clog screens and bangers. Smoke those with flower or use them in edibles.
Check the grade
Bubble hash is graded by micron size, the hole size of the filter bag it came through. Full melt comes from 73 to 120 micron bags. It bubbles on a hot nail and leaves little residue. Half melt comes from wider ranges and leaves more char. Food grade sits at 25 micron and at 160 micron and up. It holds plant matter. It burns dirty in a rig.
Tools
- Glass pipe with a metal or glass screen
- Bong with a screen or an ice pinch
- Dry herb vaporizer with a concentrate pad
- Quartz banger, carb cap, and dab tool for full melt
- Toothpick and parchment paper for portioning
Method 1: Pipe or bong
- Break off 0.05 g to 0.1 g. Crumble it into pieces the size of a grain of rice. Cold hash crumbles. Warm hash smears.
- Set a screen in the bowl. Add a thin bed of flower if the hash is not full melt.
- Place the hash on the screen or on the flower.
- Touch the flame to the hash for one second. Stop. Pull. The hash cherries and holds heat. Take a small hit. Hash smoke is dense.
- Stir the bowl with a toothpick between hits. A clogged screen blocks airflow.
Method 2: Bowl sandwich
Pack flower in the bottom of the bowl. Add hash in the middle. Cover it with more flower. The flower holds the hash in place and keeps it off the screen. Light the top layer. The hash melts into the flower. This method works for every grade.
Method 3: Dry herb vaporizer
Set the device to 190 C (375 F). Place 0.05 g of hash on a concentrate pad or between two layers of flower. Draw at a slow rate for 10 to 15 seconds. Raise the temperature to 220 C (428 F) for the last draws. Vaporizers leave less tar than combustion. Clean the chamber after each session. Hash resin hardens when it cools.
Method 4: Dab rig for full melt
Heat a quartz banger until it glows, then wait 30 to 45 seconds. The target surface temperature is 230 C to 290 C (446 F to 554 F). Drop 0.03 g to 0.05 g of hash on the floor of the banger. Cap it. Draw. Swab the banger with a cotton swab while it is still warm. Hash that is not full melt will char and stain the quartz.
Storage
Keep bubble hash in parchment inside a glass jar. Store it at 15 C to 20 C (60 F to 68 F), away from light. Cold hash crumbles and portions with less loss. Warm hash sticks to fingers and tools. A cold gram keeps more of its weight than a warm gram.
Convenience trade-offs
Bubble hash takes work. It needs a screen, a flame or a rig, and a clean banger. Pre-rolled hash holes, hash vape cartridges, and portioned hash pucks remove those steps. The trade is control. A cartridge gives a fixed dose and no grade choice. Loose hash lets you pick the micron range and the temperature.
