Coco coir is coconut husk pith. It holds water and air at the same time. Cannabis grows fast in it. The tradeoff: coir binds calcium and magnesium, and it releases potassium and sodium. You must feed cal-mag and water often.
What coco coir does
Coir holds about 8 to 9 times its weight in water. Air porosity stays near 20 percent after drainage. That mix of water and oxygen drives root growth. Coir has a cation exchange capacity of 40 to 100 cmol/kg. Those sites hold calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Sodium remains in raw coir from the salt water used to soften husks. Rinse it out.

Rinse and buffer before planting
Flush the coir with plain water until the runoff EC drops below 0.5. Then buffer it. Soak the coir in water with calcium nitrate at 1.0 g per liter, or a cal-mag product at the label rate. Wait 8 to 12 hours. Drain. Do this once before planting. Buffering loads the exchange sites with calcium and magnesium so the plant can reach them.

Mix ratio and pot size
Most growers use 70 percent coco and 30 percent perlite. Perlite adds drainage. A 3-gallon pot holds one plant. Small tents work with 2 gallons. Put a 1 to 2 inch layer of perlite at the pot bottom to keep the drain hole open.

pH and EC
Target pH 5.8 to 6.2 in the root zone. Check the runoff, not just the input. Target EC changes with stage. Seedlings: 0.6 to 1.0. Vegetation: 1.2 to 1.8. Flower: 1.6 to 2.4. High EC burns leaf tips.
Watering schedule
Coco coir drains fast. Water to 10 to 20 percent runoff at each event. In vegetation, water once per day. In flower, water 2 to 4 times per day. Small pots need more events than large pots. Do not let the coir dry out between waterings. Dry coir pulls salts back into solution and raises EC. A drip system on a timer handles the load.
Nutrients
Use a nutrient line made for coir, or a hydroponic salt blend. Coco needs extra calcium and magnesium in every feed. Add cal-mag at 3 to 5 mL per gallon, or follow the bottle. Do not use a soil nutrient blend. It lacks the calcium level coir demands.
Common problems
- Brown spots on leaves: calcium or magnesium shortage. Raise cal-mag.
- Burnt leaf tips: EC too high. Flush with half-strength feed.
- Slow growth: pH out of range. Calibrate the meter.
- Salt crust on the pot rim: runoff volume too low. Increase it.
Cost and work
A 10-pound block of compressed coir expands to about 2 cubic feet. That fills about four 3-gallon pots. Coir costs more than peat at retail. It needs daily watering and daily pH checks. The work is the price of the fast growth.
