One thing matters more than the numbers themselves. That pressure figure is at the bag, not on your gauge. Nearly every disappointing first press traces back to that mix-up, because a gauge reading of 400 PSI can easily mean 800 PSI where the resin actually is.

Why you can't tune heat and force separately

Temperature decides how much pressure the material can survive. Warm resin turns thin and mobile, so it flows out under modest force. Cold resin stays thick, so you have to push harder to get the same yield, and pushing hard on a cold puck is how seams split and bags tear.

Heat also costs you something. Terpenes are volatile, and the longer and hotter you run, the more of the aromatic fraction leaves the room instead of landing in the jar. Push past roughly 220°F and you also start nudging THCA toward THC, which changes the character of the finished oil. Short dwell times at the top of the flower range keep that in check.

Temperature ranges that hold up

  • Flower: 190°F to 220°F. Lower end for flavor and lighter color, upper end when yield is the priority.
  • Dry sift: 170°F to 190°F. Sift releases fast, so heat buys you little.
  • Bubble hash: 150°F to 170°F. Cooler runs give that pale, badder-like texture people chase.
  • Live and fresh frozen hash: 140°F to 160°F with small loads and a patient ramp.

What the pressure numbers actually mean

Your gauge reads hydraulic pressure in the cylinder. Converting that to pressure at the bag takes two steps. First, gauge PSI times cylinder piston area, divided by platen area, gives you platen PSI. Then platen PSI times platen area, divided by the bag's contact area, gives you bag PSI.

A concrete example helps. Say you run 4x4 inch plates, which is 16 square inches, and your bag presents a face about 2x4 inches, or 8 square inches. The bag is half the platen area, so pressure at the bag is roughly double what you read at the plates. That 400 PSI platen reading is closer to 800 PSI on the puck.

This is why bag size and fill volume change your recipe. A smaller bag concentrates the same force into less area. Pre-pressing into a puck, or folding a bottle-tech fold, evens out that contact so you aren't creating hot spots.

A starting recipe

  1. Flower: 200°F, 800 to 1,000 PSI at the bag, 30 second ramp, 90 second dwell.
  2. Dry sift: 180°F, 500 to 700 PSI, 20 second ramp, 60 to 90 second dwell.
  3. Bubble hash: 160°F, 300 to 500 PSI, 30 second ramp, 45 to 90 second dwell.
  4. Live hash: 145°F to 155°F, 250 to 400 PSI, slow ramp, longer dwell, tiny loads.

Ramp means you reach full force gradually rather than slamming the puck. Give the oil a path out before you seal the bag against the plates.

Reading the results

  • Dark, greenish oil that sizzles and tastes harsh: too hot.
  • Pucks that come out dry with oil still trapped inside: not enough pressure, or too short a dwell.
  • Blowouts and torn bags: too much force, usually applied too fast.
  • Thin yield and a shattery, hard-to-collect result: too cold for the material.

Where convenience fits in

Modern presses ship with digital controllers, pressure gauges, and preset programs, and that has made home rosin far less fussy than it was a few years ago. I still tell people to treat presets as a starting point, not a verdict. A preset cannot know that your bag is 37 microns instead of 90, or that your plates are 3x5 instead of 4x4. Those two variables alone shift the right pressure by hundreds of PSI.

The practical move is to fix your temperature first, then walk pressure up in small steps across a few presses with the same strain, bag, and load size. Write down what you changed. After four or five runs you'll have a number that works for your setup, and you'll stop guessing every time you load a bag.
