How finely to grind cannabis for joints
Medium. Aim for pieces about 1 to 3 mm across. That is about the size of half a peppercorn or a grain of rice. Grind 2 to 4 turns in a hand grinder and stop.
Why medium beats fine
A fine grind turns flower into powder. Powder packs into a dense rod. Air cannot move through a dense rod, so the ember stalls on one side. The joint burns hot, hits harsh, and pulls resin through the paper. Fine powder also falls through the paper seam and into your mouth.
How to Grind Cannabis for Cooking
Why medium beats coarse
Coarse chunks leave gaps. Gaps let the ember race down one side, which is called canoeing. Chunks fall out of the open end and burn uneven. A joint rolled from whole nugs will not stay lit.
Grind size by format
- Thin paper, hand rolled: 1 to 2 mm.
- Cone or pre-rolled tube: 2 to 3 mm. Cones taper, so the tip needs a finer grind than the base.
- Rolling machine: 2 to 3 mm.
- Pipe or bong bowl: 3 to 5 mm.
- Dry herb vaporizer: 0.5 to 1 mm. Vaporizers need surface area. Joints do not.
Moisture changes the answer
Flower at 58 to 62 percent relative humidity grinds into soft pieces. Flower below 50 percent shatters into dust no matter how short you grind. If bud crumbles when you squeeze it, add a humidity pack for 24 hours before rolling. Freezing bud before grinding makes trichomes brittle. More kief lands in the grinder screen and less stays on the flower.
Tools
A two-piece grinder gives the most control because you see the pieces. A three-chamber grinder with a screen collects kief but strips some resin. Scissors or fingers work for coarse pieces. Electric coffee grinders produce dust and are hard to control. Clean the grinder. Resin buildup smears flower into paste.
Packing
Roll with a light taper, wider at the lit end. Do not compress. Draw resistance should feel like a thick straw, not a milkshake. A joint that pulls hard is packed too tight. Empty it and regrind coarser.
What is not settled
No public standard sets grind size for joints. The 1 to 3 mm range comes from commercial pre-roll production and from lab work on particle size in cannabis extraction. Strains differ. Dense flower grinds into smaller pieces than airy flower at the same number of turns.
