Pick a butane lighter. It lights in one motion, costs about $2, and needs no second tool. A hemp wick burns cooler and adds no butane to the pull, but you must light the wick with a lighter or a match first, then relight it for every hit. That extra step is the entire trade.
How each one works
A disposable lighter holds butane under pressure. PubChem lists n-butane with a boiling point near -0.5 C, so the fuel turns to gas the moment the valve opens. A flint wheel sparks the gas. The flame sits at the end of the nozzle.
Hemp wick is braided hemp fiber dipped in beeswax. Beeswax melts at about 62 C to 65 C. You hold the lit end near the bowl and draw the flame down. The wick keeps a small ember after you blow it out.
Flame temperature and byproducts
A butane flame runs hotter than a hemp wick ember. The gap matters for taste. A hot flame can char plant material in one pass. A cooler wick gives a slower roast.
Neither method removes combustion. Burning plant matter makes tar, carbon monoxide, and fine particles. The CDC notes that incomplete combustion of butane produces carbon monoxide. Hemp wick combustion makes smoke and ash of its own. No controlled trial has compared the two for lung outcomes.
Cost and upkeep
- Lighter: $1.50 to $3 per unit. One unit lasts weeks of daily use. No ash, no refill. Fails in wind unless you buy a torch model.
- Hemp wick: $8 to $12 for a 200-foot spool. That spool covers months at a few inches per session. You still need a lighter, so the real cost is wick plus lighter.
- Ash: hemp wick leaves a black tip. You snap it off and keep the rest of the spool.

If you want one item in a pocket
A standard disposable lighter. Buy a five-pack and keep two in a drawer. A torch insert for a refillable case handles wind and costs $10 to $15.
If taste is the priority
A 200-foot spool with a beeswax coat. Look for a thin coat and unbleached hemp. Thick coats drip wax into the bowl.
If you want both
Keep the lighter in a pocket and the spool at home. Light the wick from the lighter. Blow out the wick between hits to slow the burn.
