Start With the Card
In states with a medical program, a dispensary cannot sell to you until the state issues a patient card or a physician submits a certification. A first-time discount is worth nothing without that step. Certification windows run 30 days to 12 months, and the store cannot sell past the expiration date on the card.
Call the shop before the first visit. Ask three questions: does the store accept your state card, what is the first-visit discount, and what does the discount exclude. Answers change. A promotion posted in January may be gone in March.

What First-Time Patient Deals Cover
- Percent off the first purchase. Common range at US dispensaries is 10 percent to 25 percent.
- One-item promotions: a single edible, a pre-roll, or a topical for one cent.
- Waived activation or consultation fee.
- Loyalty points posted at signup, sometimes 100 to 500 points.
- Buy-one-get-one on a named brand or product category.
Read the exclusions. Many shops exclude flower, exclude items already on sale, and apply the discount before tax. Most shops do not stack discounts with loyalty points, senior discounts, or industry discounts.

Parameters to Check Before You Buy
- Possession limit. Most medical states cap flower at 1 to 3 ounces at one time. Some states count concentrates against a separate gram limit.
- Per-transaction cap. A store may sell 1 ounce per visit even if the state allows 2.5 ounces at home.
- Taxes. State excise tax on cannabis ranges from 0 percent to 37 percent. Sales tax applies on top in most states.
- Payment. Federal banking rules keep many shops on cash. Some take debit through a third-party processor.
- Identification. Bring a state ID, the patient card or certification, and a caregiver card if someone else buys for you.
- Purchase history. Some states track sales in a database and block a purchase that exceeds the rolling limit.
Pitfalls
- A deal that requires an email, a text opt-in, or a review. Ask if the price drops without it.
- Prices quoted before tax. Add 10 percent to 40 percent in high-tax states.
- Delivery. Legal in some states, not others. A first-visit discount may not apply to delivery orders.
- Interstate transport. Carrying cannabis across a state line is a federal offense, including between two legal states.
- Potency labels. THC percentages on flower vary by test lab and batch. A 30 percent label is not a dose.
- Certification renewal gaps. A renewal can take days to process in some states.
Where Convenience Fits
Order-ahead, curbside pickup, and delivery change where patients spend. They do not change limits, taxes, or discount rules. A shop with a 20 percent first-visit discount and no parking can lose the sale to a shop with 15 percent and same-day pickup.
Federal Status
Cannabis remains Schedule I under federal law. The FDA has not approved botanical cannabis for any medical use. It has approved specific cannabis-derived drugs. State medical programs operate under state law.
