Short answer
Commercial cannabis cleaners get glass functionally clean, not lab-sterile clean. Soak long enough and rinse properly, and visible resin, smell, and most of the film go away. What survives is the stuff trapped in scratches, in the seams where two glass pieces join, in perc slits, and in porous materials like silicone or wood, where resin soaked into the surface and no solvent pulls it back out.

What you're actually trying to dissolve
Resin is a blend: cannabinoids, terpenes, waxes, plant lipids, and carbon from burnt material. Fresh resin is soft, amber, and sticky. Resin that has been smoked through a few times turns dark and hard, and that is the layer people mean when they say a piece is resinated.

The chemistry is simple. Resin is nonpolar, water is polar, and the two refuse to mix. Soap helps a little by lifting oils off a surface, but it cannot dissolve baked-on carbon. Alcohol, acetone, and the solvent blends in commercial cleaners can, because like dissolves like.

Why "completely" is a hard promise
Three things limit any cleaner:
- Geometry. Percolators, honeycomb discs, recycler arms, and narrow downstems have pockets you cannot reach with a brush or a shake. Solvent has to sit there long enough to work.
- Set time. A 30-second swirl handles a lightly used bowl. A piece hit daily for months needs 30 minutes to overnight, and often two rounds with a rinse in between.
- Reused solvent. Reusable cleaners and leftover iso both hold dissolved resin. Once the liquid is saturated, it stops cleaning and starts redepositing a brown film on the glass you just cleaned.
How to tell it is actually clean
Do not trust the look alone. Hold the piece up to a bright window or a lamp. Then:
- Wipe the inside with a white paper towel. Any tan or brown streak means you left a layer.
- Smell it after it dries. Clean glass smells like nothing. A piece with a film smells sour or ashy even when it looks clear.
- Run water through it. Water should sheet off clean glass instead of beading up in oily spots.
- Check the first hit. If it tastes like cleaner, you did not rinse enough. If it tastes flat or harsh, there is still resin in there.
Materials that never come fully clean
Silicone is the big one. It is slightly porous, resin and terpene oils migrate into the surface, and cleaners only reach the outer layer. A silicone bong can look and feel clean and still hold the smell, because the odor is inside the material, not on it. Wood and unglazed ceramic behave the same way. Acrylic and polycarbonate are a different problem: alcohol can craze or crack them over time, so they should not be soaked in iso at all.
Glass is non-porous by comparison. That is why glass is the one material you can genuinely reset to nearly new.
The convenience trade-off
Single-use cleaners, soak capsules, and ultrasonic baths all sell convenience, and for light resin they deliver. They fall down in two places. First, convenience formulas are usually weaker than plain 91% isopropyl plus coarse salt, so they need more time, not less. Second, most of them assume you will shake and rinse, and you cannot shake a rig with a fixed perc without risking a break.
Ultrasonic cleaners come closest to a hands-off complete clean. Cavitation reaches into perc slits and seams that no brush touches. They still need the right liquid and a warm bath, and they will not fix a silicone piece.
A routine that gets to done
- Empty the piece and rinse with hot tap water to knock out loose ash.
- Fill with 91% isopropyl and add coarse salt for wide glass chambers. Skip the salt in percs, where grains can lodge.
- Seal the openings and let it sit. Twenty minutes for a lightly used piece, overnight for a heavy one.
- Shake if the piece allows it. Never shake a rig you cannot hold comfortably with both hands.
- Dump, rinse with hot water, then rinse again with warm water and a drop of dish soap to pull off any solvent film.
- Rinse the soap out, dry, and check with a paper towel.
- Repeat once if the towel still picks up color. Two short rounds beat one long soak once the solvent is already dirty.
Safety notes worth repeating
Isopropyl is flammable and evaporates fast. Work near a window, away from a flame or a pilot light. Acetone works faster but eats through decals, painted logos, and some plastics, and it strips oils from your skin. Never microwave a piece to speed things up. A bowl of warm tap water around your soaking jar does the same job safely.
