How often to clean a dab rig
Clean a dab rig every 1 to 2 weeks if you dab daily. Change the water every day. Clean the rig after each session if you dab several times a day or use high-reclaim concentrates. Occasional users can clean every 3 to 4 weeks.
These intervals are practical ranges, not lab standards. Residue build depends on dab size, temperature, concentrate type, and rig design.
Daily: water and mouthpiece
Pour out water after the last dab. Rinse with hot water. Refill with fresh water. Water left in a rig collects reclaim, dust, and film. A dirty mouthpiece puts residue near your lips.
Weekly: full clean for daily users
Disassemble the rig. Remove the nail or banger. Soak glass in 91% isopropyl alcohol for 30 to 60 minutes. Add coarse salt for stubborn spots. Shake. Rinse with hot water. Let parts dry.
Heavy use: every 1 to 3 days
Dab rigs used 5 or more times a day clog faster. Reclaim collects in the neck and downstem. Low-temp dabs leave more residue than high-temp dabs. Clean the banger after each dab with a dry swab and an alcohol swab.
Signs the rig needs cleaning now
- Water looks cloudy or smells sour
- Reclaim blocks airflow
- Dab tastes burnt or harsh
- Resin coats the glass above the water line
What not to do
Do not clean hot glass with cold water. Thermal shock can crack the rig. Do not pour alcohol into a hot banger. Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Do not reuse dirty alcohol for a final rinse.
Supplies
91% isopropyl alcohol, coarse salt, cotton swabs, paper towels, hot water. Silicone rigs need less alcohol soak time. Check maker instructions for colored glass and decals.
