How to clean a dugout and bat
Empty the herb chamber. Pull the bat out of its tube. Scrape loose resin with a paper clip. Soak a metal bat in 91% isopropyl alcohol for 15 to 30 minutes, then run a pipe cleaner through the bore. Wipe a wooden bat with a swab dipped in alcohol. Do not soak wood. Let every part air dry for 15 minutes before you refill.

Step 1: Empty and separate the parts
Tip the ground herb into a jar. Tap the box over a tray to catch kief. Slide the lid off. Pull out the bat, the poker, and the tamper. Set the wooden box on a dry towel.
Step 2: Scrape the bat
Resin bakes into carbon inside the tube. Work a paper clip through the bowl end and out the mouth end. Do not push a metal pick through a wooden bat, because the tip can split the grain. Tap the loosened carbon onto a paper towel.

Step 3: Soak metal bats
Put the metal bat in a glass jar. Cover it with 91% isopropyl alcohol. Add 1 teaspoon of coarse salt if the bore is clogged. Close the lid. Shake for 30 seconds. Let it sit 15 to 30 minutes. Run a pipe cleaner through the bore, then rinse with warm water. The 91% grade holds 9% water, which lifts residue. The 99% grade flashes off faster.
Step 4: Clean a wooden bat
Do not soak a wooden bat. Wood takes in alcohol and water, swells, then cracks at the bowl when it dries. Wipe the bowl with a cotton swab damp with alcohol. Scrape carbon with a wooden toothpick. Dry it on a paper towel.
Step 5: Clean the herb chamber and slide
Brush out loose plant material with a dry swab first. Wipe the chamber walls with a second swab damp with alcohol. Wipe the slide lid and its channel. Keep liquid out of the track. A wet track swells and the lid sticks.
Step 6: Clean the box body
Wipe the outside with a cloth damp with mild soap and water. Alcohol strips varnish and paint on finished wood. Test one drop on the bottom before you use it on the top. Do not put the box in a dishwasher. Do not boil it.
Step 7: Dry and reassemble
Air dry every part for 15 minutes. Isopropyl alcohol flashes off at room temperature. Wait until the smell is gone. Slide the bat into its tube and refill the chamber with ground herb.
How often to clean
Clean the bat after every 5 to 10 uses. Resin narrows the bore to a few millimeters and cuts airflow. A clogged bat burns hot in the middle and pulls weak at the mouth end. Wipe the chamber each week if you load it daily. Deep clean the box each month.
What to avoid
- Boiling water on wood. It warps the lid and lifts the finish.
- Acetone or nail polish remover on painted boxes.
- Metal brushes on wood surfaces.
- Soaking the dugout body in any liquid.
- Reusing alcohol that has turned dark brown. Replace it each session.
- Flame near open alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol vapor ignites.
When to replace parts
Replace the bat when the bowl rim chips or the tube bends. A bent tube does not seal at the mouth. Replace the dugout when the slide lid no longer sits flush, when the hinge pin breaks, or when the chamber walls split. Glue repairs do not hold on a box that sees daily use.
