Step-by-step fixes
- Press the battery button and watch the light. Five flashes or no light means the cell holds no charge, no matter how long it sat on the cable.
- Unscrew the cart and look at the brass pin inside the battery's 510 connector. A pin that sits below the rim will never reach the cart.
- Wipe the metal contact on the bottom of the cart with a dry cotton swab until bare metal shows.
- Gently lift the battery's center pin a fraction of a millimeter with a paper clip, then reseat the cart.
- Test the battery with a second cart. If that cart fires, the battery works and the fault lives in the first cart.
- Test the suspect cart on a second battery. If it fails on both, the coil or the internal wiring is the fault.
- Draw on the cart without pressing the button. No airflow means a clog, not an electrical fault.
- Clear a clog with a short firm pull, or warm the cart in your hand for two minutes to soften the oil.
- Take a slow steady draw for three to four seconds. Hard fast pulls flood the coil and cut vapor output.
- Lower the voltage if the battery has settings. High wattage burns the wick and leaves a burnt taste with thin vapor.
- Clean the threads with a swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol and let them dry before you reconnect the cart.
Reading the results
Work through the list in order and stop at the first step that changes the outcome. A cart that fires on a second battery was never the problem. A battery that fires a second cart was never the problem. If both parts pass their cross tests and the cart still will not produce vapor, the coil has burned out or the oil has separated, and the cart is finished.
Signs the cart is done
Replace the cart when the oil has turned dark and runny, when the mouthpiece leaks into your mouth, when the bottom contact is wet with oil, or when the cart rattles. Oil that reaches the battery pin can short the connection and damage the battery over time. Wipe the pin before you attach a new cart.
Prevention
- Store carts upright so oil does not pool in the airway.
- Charge with the cable that came with the battery.
- Do not leave a battery on the charger overnight.
- Keep the battery below the manufacturer's maximum voltage for the cart.
- Retire a cart once the oil level drops below the intake holes.
