Yellow leaves on a cannabis plant trace back to a short list of causes: mobile nutrients being pulled out of older tissue, a root zone pH that has drifted out of range, roots that stay wet too long, or an insect feeding on the plant. You can narrow it to one of those four by looking at three things: which leaves turned first, how the yellow sits on the leaf, and how the roots and medium feel. Everything else is guesswork in a bottle.
Answer first: read the pattern
The position of the yellowing is the fastest clue. Plants move nutrients they can relocate (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium) from old tissue into new growth, so a shortage of those shows up on lower leaves first. Nutrients the plant cannot relocate (iron, calcium, zinc, boron) leave new growth pale or deformed because the shortage is happening in tissue that just formed.
The shape of the yellow matters just as much. A whole leaf fading evenly is different from yellow that appears between the veins while the veins stay green. That interveinal look is the signature of iron and magnesium, and the two are separated by leaf age.
Match the symptom to the cause
Older, lower leaves going pale yellow and limp
Classic nitrogen shortage. Nitrogen is mobile, so the plant strips it from the bottom of the canopy to keep the top growing. Plants in heavy flower with a weak feed schedule do this on purpose. Cold root zones and a wet medium can block uptake even when nitrogen is present in the feed, which is why this symptom sometimes shows up in a well-fed garden.
Yellow between the veins, older and middle leaves
Magnesium. The leaf margins often stay green while the space between veins fades, and the leaf may curl upward at the edges. This shows on older tissue because magnesium is mobile. Long-flowering plants under strong LED light draw it down fast.
Yellow between the veins on new growth, veins still green
Iron. Iron is immobile, so new leaves turn pale first, and the veins stay sharp and dark. The usual trigger is not a lack of iron in the feed but pH that has crept up and locked it out. Coco and soilless mixes are the common offenders, especially when the input water is hard or alkaline. Zinc and manganese lockouts look similar and often happen together.
Yellow to brown edges and tips on older leaves
Potassium. The yellow starts at the leaf margins and tips, then progresses to necrosis and crisp edges. It tends to appear mid to late flower when potassium demand spikes.
Pale, droopy plant with more yellow than the feed should allow
Wet roots. When the medium stays saturated, roots lose the oxygen they need, stop taking up water and nutrients, and the plant wilts and yellows even though the pot is heavy. Pull the plant and check the root ball. Healthy roots are firm and light. Rot is brown, mushy, and smells sour. Overwatering is the single most common reason a home grower's plant turns yellow, and it is usually disguised as a nutrient problem.
Tiny yellow speckles that look like dust stuck in the leaf
Spider mites. They feed on the underside of leaves and leave stippling, a fine peppering of pale dots that spreads into larger yellow patches. Webbing is a late sign. Use a bright light and a loupe on the leaf undersides before you add anything to the feed. Thrips scrape tissue and leave silvery patches with black specks; broad mites twist and yellow new growth.
Bleached or crinkled top growth
Light stress. A canopy pushed too close to a high-output fixture will fade and taco its top leaves, while the lower canopy stays green. Low light does the opposite: the plant stretches and the lower growth fades slowly, but low light rarely produces sharp interveinal patterns.
A five-minute check order
- Note which leaves turned first and whether the veins stayed green.
- Measure the pH of your input water, then the runoff or root-zone slurry. Aim for roughly 5.5 to 6.2 in coco and soilless, and 6.0 to 7.0 in soil. Penn State Extension notes that iron, manganese, zinc, and phosphorus become less available as pH rises, which is exactly the pattern that looks like an iron shortage.
- Pick up the pot or read a moisture probe. A pot that still feels heavy days after watering is the answer, not a nutrient chart.
- Flip leaves and scan the undersides with strong light. Check stems and the top inch of medium for flying adults.
- Check feed strength and runoff EC to see whether salts have built up. Salt buildup in the root zone causes deficiencies even when you have been feeding generously.
Where convenience costs you
Most yellow-leaf questions get solved faster now because answers are everywhere, and that speed is the whole appeal of the current market. It is also what sends people down the wrong path. The reflex is to add something: a calmag supplement, a nitrogen boost, a flush, then another bottle when nothing changes.
Each of those changes the root zone in a way you cannot read anymore. Flushing removes the data along with the salts and can strip magnesium out of a plant that was only slightly off. Adding nitrogen to an iron lockout makes the lockout worse. The convenience is real, but it has to come after a look at leaf age, leaf pattern, pH, and moisture. That check takes minutes and it does not require a product.
Fix, then verify
Match your fix to the cause and change one thing at a time. For nitrogen or magnesium, adjust the feed ratio and keep pH in range. For an iron or micronutrient lockout, correct pH first and watch new leaves, because old yellow leaves will not recover their color. For wet roots, improve drainage, raise the pot, and let the medium dry back before the next watering. For mites, treat undersides thoroughly and repeat on a schedule that breaks the egg cycle.
Mark the leaf you diagnosed today and photograph it. If the yellow stops spreading within a few days and new growth comes in green, you were right. If it keeps climbing the plant, you guessed, and the fastest route back is to recheck pH and root moisture before touching the feed again.
