Check the cartridge first

  1. Unscrew the cartridge from the battery.
  2. Wipe the bottom of the cartridge with a dry paper towel.
  3. Thread it onto a second battery or a 510-thread adapter.
  4. Note whether it fires on the second device.

If the cartridge works elsewhere, the fault sits in the original battery. A cartridge that leaked has flooded its own air path, and no battery will pull vapor through it. If the mouthpiece gurgles or the oil tastes burnt on a known-good battery, replace the cartridge instead.

Unlock the battery

  1. Press the power button five times in two seconds.
  2. Watch for a flash or a light pulse.
  3. Press and hold the button while drawing if the battery is button-activated.
  4. Draw on the mouthpiece without pressing if the battery is draw-activated.

Five fast clicks toggle a lock on most 510 batteries, and a locked battery feels exactly like a dead one. If the light flashes but nothing heats, the lock is off and the problem is elsewhere.

Charge it and watch the light

  1. Plug the battery into the charger it shipped with.
  2. Watch the indicator light for 10 seconds.
  3. Leave it connected for 45 to 60 minutes.
  4. Unplug it when the light turns green or stops blinking.

No light at all points to a failed charger, a bent charger pin, or a cell that dropped below its cutoff voltage. A lithium cell that sits in deep discharge enters a protection state and will not accept a normal charge again.

Clean the threads and contact pin

  1. Dip a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Swab the threaded collar inside the battery.
  3. Swab the round center pin at the bottom of the well.
  4. Let the parts dry for two minutes before reassembly.
  5. Thread the cartridge back on finger tight.

Distilled oil leaves a thin film on metal. That film blocks current across the two contact points and mimics a dead cell. Dark residue on the swab confirms the diagnosis.

Raise the center pin

  1. Look into the battery well with a light.
  2. Locate the small round pin in the center of the well.
  3. Slide a sewing pin or a small flat screwdriver under the edge of the pin.
  4. Lift it a fraction of a millimeter, working around the rim.

Cranking a cartridge down seats this pin deeper with every use until it no longer touches the cartridge contact. Stop if the pin spins or feels loose inside the housing. A free-spinning pin means the solder joint has failed, and the battery needs replacement.

Check draw sensors and airflow

Draw-activated pens hide a pressure sensor in the airway. A clogged intake hole on the side of the barrel starves that sensor, so the battery never triggers. Clear the hole with a pin, then draw on the mouthpiece with the cartridge removed to hear whether air moves.

When to stop and replace it

  • The casing is swollen, dented, or cracked.
  • The battery gets hot while charging or while firing.
  • The charger light never changes color.
  • You see corrosion or burn marks at the contact pin.

A swollen lithium cell is a fire risk. Do not puncture it, do not keep charging it, and do not throw it in household trash. Take it to a battery recycler or a household hazardous waste drop-off.

Prevent the next failure

  • Charge to full before the first use of a new battery.
  • Use only the charger that came in the box.
  • Seat cartridges snug, not tight.
  • Wipe the threads once a week.
