Aeration
Perlite, pumice, and rice hulls keep the root zone open. Super soil runs dense, so plan on aeration at 25 to 30 percent of total volume.
How to Mix Super Soil
- Spread the base soil on a tarp in a layer about 3 inches deep.
- Sprinkle the dry amendments across the surface using rates for one cubic foot of base soil: 1 cup worm castings, 1/2 cup blood meal, 1/2 cup bone meal, 1/2 cup kelp meal, 1/4 cup dolomite lime, 1/4 cup gypsum, 1/4 cup rock dust.
- Turn the pile with a shovel until the color is uniform, then turn it two more times.
- Add water while turning until a handful holds a ball without dripping.
- Move the mix into a tote or a covered pile and let it cure for 30 to 60 days.
- Turn the pile every 7 to 10 days during the cure to keep the center from going anaerobic.
- Check pH and electrical conductivity with a meter before planting. Aim for pH 6.2 to 6.8.
- Fill the bottom two thirds of each pot with super soil and cap the top third with a plain starter mix so seedlings are not sitting in hot soil.
Where Convenience Changes the Decision
Bagged super soil costs more per cubic foot than a DIY batch, and the gap widens once you price individual meals. The trade is time against certainty. A commercial bag is already cured, already tested, and ready on the day you need it, which matters when a grow is on a schedule.
