Distance and drive time
Ten minutes against 25 minutes is the gap most shoppers weigh. Traffic at 5 p.m. can double a 10-minute drive. Wait times at the same store change by hour.
Hours
Most storefronts open between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Some states cap closing times, and a few require closing at 9 p.m. Check the state regulator page for the limit that applies to the address.
Order ahead and pickup
Online ordering with in-store pickup cuts a visit to minutes. Stores hold orders for a set window, from 1 hour to 24 hours. Stock feeds lag. A product can sell out between order and pickup.
Delivery
Delivery runs in a subset of states and cities. Windows run from 1 hour to 3 hours. Fees run from $5 to $15, and minimum orders run from $25 to $100. Not every ZIP code is covered.
Price and tax
State excise taxes range from 0% to more than 30%. Local sales tax adds on top. Two stores 3 miles apart can sit in different tax districts and post different totals for the same item.
ID and payment
Every state checks ID at the door. Adult-use sales require age 21. Medical sales go to cardholders as young as 18 in some states. Federal law lists cannabis as Schedule I, so many banks do not serve the industry. Many stores take cash, and some take debit through cashless terminals.

- Drive time at the hour you plan to go.
- Closing time and last order time.
- Pickup wait, posted or from recent reviews.
- Tax rate at that address.
- Stock for the exact product and size.
When convenience loses
First-time buyers and medical patients with a set product need travel farther. A store 40 minutes away can beat a store 10 minutes away when the closer store does not carry the item, or when staff on site answer questions about dosing. For a routine restock, distance wins.
