Short answer

Store cannabis flower in an airtight, opaque container at 58% to 62% relative humidity and 60°F to 70°F. Glass and stainless steel hold a seal best. Plastic bags, silicone jars, and resealable pouches are convenient and lose terpenes and potency faster. Convenience decides purchases in US legal markets. It should not decide storage.

What the container controls

Four things degrade dried flower: oxygen, light, heat, and moisture loss.

  • Oxygen oxidizes THC into CBN. Potency drops.
  • UV light breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes. Clear glass on a windowsill is the worst option.
  • Heat drives off volatile terpenes such as myrcene, limonene, and pinene.
  • Moisture below 55% RH makes flower brittle and trichomes flake off. Above 65% RH raises mold risk.

Container types

Glass

Inert. No odor transfer. Mason jars with a rubber gasket seal work. Clear glass passes light, so keep it in a drawer or use amber or black glass.

Stainless steel

Blocks light and air. No smell retention. Costs more. Some models hold a humidity pack in the lid.

Plastic

PET and HDPE containers let trace oxygen through the wall over months. They also build static charge that pulls trichomes off the flower. Fine for two weeks. Poor for six months.

Silicone

Silicone absorbs terpenes and holds odor. It attracts lint and dust. Worst long-term material for flower.

Mylar and pouches

Mylar blocks light and costs little. The zipper is the weak point. It stops sealing after 5 to 10 openings. Heat-sealed mylar works for bulk storage.

Humidity and temperature

Two-way humidity packs sold at 58% and 62% RH add or remove water vapor to hold the target. A 58% pack suits long storage and vaporizers. A 62% pack suits smoking and short storage. Packs last 2 to 4 months in a sealed jar. Do not use them on moldy flower. Rehydration of bone-dry flower takes days. It does not restore lost terpenes.

Keep the jar between 60°F and 70°F. A refrigerator adds condensation each time it opens. A freezer cracks trichomes.

Convenience formats

Pre-roll tubes, single-serve pouches, and resealable bags cut steps. They also hold small amounts, so surface area to volume is high. A gram in a loose pouch loses terpenes faster than 7 grams in a sealed jar. Reusable versions of the same formats solve this. Buy a glass jar for the drawer. Keep the pouch for the car.

Legal packaging rules

US child-resistant packaging rules under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act apply to cannabis products in legal states. Test protocol 16 CFR 1700.20 requires that 85% of children under 5 fail to open a package in 5 minutes, and that 80% of adults open and reseal it. Convenient packaging still has to meet this test.

What to check before you buy

  1. Does the lid have a gasket or threaded seal?
  2. Does the material block light?
  3. Does the interior hold a humidity pack without touching flower?
  4. Does the size match consumption? A 4 oz jar holding 2 grams has too much headspace.
  5. Can it be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol between strains?
