Cannabis Pest Control
Start with the least toxic option that fixes the problem: remove infested plant material, correct the growing environment, and apply a targeted treatment only if the pest comes back. Most cannabis outbreaks come down to five pests (spider mites, aphids, fungus gnats, thrips, and caterpillars), and all five respond to the same sequence: scout, isolate, clean, treat, monitor. Heavy chemical use in flower is the fastest way to lose a crop to residue testing, so treat early and treat narrow.
Identify the pest before you spray
- Spider mites: fine webbing on bud sites and leaf undersides, stippled pale dots, specks that move.
- Aphids: dense clusters on new growth, curled leaf tips, sticky honeydew that draws mold.
- Fungus gnats: small black flies near the medium, clear larvae in the top inch of wet soil or coco.
- Thrips: silvery streaks on leaf surfaces with black fecal specks beside them.
- Caterpillars and budworms: chewed buds, hollowed stems, gray mold starting at the damage.
A 30x to 60x loupe or a USB microscope is the deciding tool here. Mite damage and thrips damage look similar to the naked eye and take different products.
What you need
- 30x to 60x loupe or USB microscope
- Yellow and blue sticky traps
- Isopropyl alcohol and clean shop towels
- Insecticidal soap, horticultural oil, and Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk)
- Beneficial insects matched to the pest (for example, Phytoseiulus persimilis for spider mites)
- Nitrile gloves, sealed bags for waste, and a separate set of tools for the quarantined plants
Contain the outbreak
- Mark every plant showing symptoms with a tag so you stop re-inspecting cleared plants.
- Move those plants to a separate room or tent at least 10 feet from healthy stock.
- Shower and change clothes before you return to the clean room, and keep a dedicated set of tools in the quarantine area.
- Seal infested leaves and stems in a plastic bag as you cut them, then close the bag before you leave the room.
- Dispose of the bag in an outdoor trash bin the same day.
Clean the space
- Remove all plant debris from the floor, pots, and drip trays.
- Vacuum the room, then empty the vacuum outdoors.
- Wipe hard surfaces, stakes, and pot rims with isopropyl alcohol.
- Wash reusable fabric pots and trellis netting in hot water, then dry them fully before reuse.
- Hang fresh sticky traps at canopy height, roughly one card per square yard.
Fix the conditions that invited the pest
- Lower daytime humidity to 45 to 55 percent to slow mites and suppress fungal growth.
- Improve airflow so leaves move under gentle circulation instead of sitting wet.
- Water from the bottom and let the top inch of medium dry to break the fungus gnat cycle.
- Filter or screen intake air to stop moths and aphids from flying in.
- Quarantine every new clone or seedling for 10 days in a separate area.
Treat the remaining infestation
- Confirm the pest again with the loupe before you choose a product.
- Test any spray on two or three leaves and wait 24 hours for burn.
- Spray leaf undersides first, then the upper surface, until the solution drips.
- Apply in dim light or after lights-out to avoid leaf burn from droplets acting as lenses.
- Use Btk for caterpillars only, since it does nothing to mites or aphids.
- Release beneficial insects 24 hours after any soap or oil spray has dried.
- Repeat the treatment on the label interval for two full cycles after you see no live pests.
Treatments ranked by risk
- Physical removal and water sprays: safe in any stage, effective for light mite pressure.
- Insecticidal soap and horticultural oil: contact killers with no residual, best in vegetative stage.
- Biological control: predatory mites, lacewing larvae, and rove beetles for ongoing suppression.
- Biorational products: use only versions registered for cannabis in your state.
- Conventional insecticides: avoid in flower and never use a product not labeled for the crop.
Monitor until harvest
Walk the room twice a week and check 10 random plants for 60 seconds each. Log what you see by date and plant number. A rising trap count is your early warning that a treatment cycle needs another pass. Keep beneficial insects in place through flower to hold mites down without adding residue, and stop all foliar sprays at least two weeks before harvest.
