  • Batch test results. Look for THC, pesticides, mold, and yeast.
  • Net weight on the label. Jar weight does not count.
  • Grade. Labels such as 90-micron, full-melt, and food-grade describe screen size and plant matter content.

  1. Trim sold as kief. Sift from leaf trim holds more plant fiber and less THC than gland sift. A $12 gram is trim sift in many shops.
  2. Kief-dusted pre-rolls. Some brands count added kief in the total weight. A 1-gram pre-roll with 0.2 grams of kief holds 0.8 grams of flower. Read the package breakdown.
  3. No batch number. Kief without a lab batch ID cannot be traced to a test. That is a stop sign.
  4. Short weight. Kief sticks to plastic and paper from static charge. Ask the budtender to weigh the jar on a scale.
  5. Storage. Light, heat, and air convert THC to CBN. CBN causes drowsiness. Keep kief in an airtight glass jar at 60 to 70 F, out of sunlight.

Convenience and the trade-off

Kief sells on speed. It needs no grinder, no rolling, and no wait. A pinch in a bowl or on a joint works in seconds. A gram of kief costs more than a gram of flower, but it holds about twice the THC per gram. That is the whole trade: pay more per gram, dose with less material.
