Cannabis in Urine: How Long

Detection time varies. No single answer applies to every person. The window depends on how much and how often you use, your body fat, your metabolism, and the test's cutoff level.

For a standard urine immunoassay, typical detection windows are:

  • Single use (one time): up to 3 days
  • Moderate use (a few times per week): 5 to 7 days
  • Chronic heavy use (daily, for months): 10 to 30 days
  • Some heavy users: more than 30 days

What the test looks for

Urine tests screen for THC-COOH, a metabolite of THC. THC-COOH is not psychoactive. The body stores this metabolite in fat tissue. Release from fat is slow. This storage explains why heavy users test positive for weeks.

Factors that change detection time

  • Frequency of use: daily use builds up more THC-COOH than occasional use.
  • Body fat: THC-COOH is fat-soluble. People with more body fat tend to have longer detection windows.
  • Metabolism: liver enzymes break down THC. A fast metabolism may shorten the window. A slow metabolism may lengthen it.
  • Dose and potency: high-THC products produce more metabolite. A single 10 mg edible may produce less metabolite than dabbing concentrated THC.
  • Test cutoff: the common immunoassay cutoff is 50 ng/mL. A cutoff of 15 ng/mL extends the detection window.
  • Hydration: drinking water dilutes urine. This can lower the concentration below the cutoff on the day of the test. It does not remove THC-COOH from the body. Dilute samples may be rejected or flagged.

Smoking vs. edibles

Edibles pass through the digestive system. Absorption is slower. Some studies suggest edibles may produce a longer detection window than smoking. The difference is small. More research is needed.

What does not work

No product clears THC-COOH from the body faster. Detox drinks, pills, and supplements lack evidence. Exercise may release stored metabolite into the blood. This can raise urine THC-COOH levels for a short time. The only proven way to pass a urine test is time.

Confirmatory testing

A positive immunoassay screen is not final. Labs confirm positive screens with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The confirmation cutoff is often 15 ng/mL. Some samples that screen positive at 50 ng/mL may fall below 15 ng/mL on confirmation.

When to expect a negative result

Use the ranges above as a guide. For chronic heavy use, a negative result may take 30 days or more. Without a lab test, you cannot know your exact detection time. No home test or calculator provides a reliable estimate.
