Quick answer
Lower dab temperatures, roughly 315°F to 450°F (160°C to 230°C) measured at the nail or crucible surface, produce vapor with fewer irritant breakdown products than dabs taken above 600°F (315°C). Lower heat lowers exposure to some thermal degradation byproducts. It does not make cannabis vapor harmless. Any inhaled cannabis vapor can irritate airways and worsen cough, wheeze, or bronchitis symptoms.
Cannabis Dab Temperature for Live Resin vs Shatter: Pick the Heat First
Why temperature matters for lung tissue
Concentrates are a mix of cannabinoids, terpenes, lipids, and residual solvents. Heat drives them into an aerosol. As temperature climbs, the chemistry changes: terpenes degrade, cannabinoids break down, and the aerosol carries more fine particulate and irritating compounds. Hotter vapor also arrives at the airway at a higher temperature, which adds a direct thermal insult on top of the chemical one.
Very hot dabs are also harsher, so users tend to take a bigger, deeper breath to compensate. That pushes more aerosol deeper into the lungs.
Temperature ranges and what they do
- 315°F to 450°F: Full cannabinoid vaporization for most concentrates, lighter vapor, milder throat hit, fewer degradation products.
- 450°F to 600°F: Denser clouds, stronger throat irritation, faster terpene breakdown and more acrid flavor.
- Above 600°F: Visible combustion risk on hot surfaces, harsh vapor, higher particulate load, and a metal or burnt taste that signals degradation.
How to take a lower-temperature dab
Prerequisites: an e-rig or quartz banger with adjustable or measurable temperature, a carb cap, and a clean water pipe. A contact thermometer or an e-rig with a temperature readout removes guesswork.
Cannabis Dab Temperature for Different Concentrates
- Set the device or heat the banger to 400°F to 450°F on the surface.
- Wait until the reading stabilizes. Do not guess from glow color.
- Load a small amount, about the size of a grain of rice.
- Cap the banger or bucket as soon as you begin to inhale, so vapor does not escape.
- Inhale slowly for two to three seconds, then stop.
- Wait five minutes before judging the effect.
- Increase by 10°F only if the vapor was too thin, and reduce by 10°F if the hit burned.
- Clean the banger after each session to prevent residue from burning on the next heat cycle.
Signs the dab was too hot
- Immediate coughing that lasts more than a minute
- A burnt, metallic, or ash-like taste
- Dark residue that does not wipe away with a dry swab
- Chest tightness or a raw, sore feeling the next morning
Any of these mean the surface temperature was too high or the concentrate was too large for the heat applied.
What temperature control cannot fix
Temperature is one variable. Cannabis aerosol still contains particulate matter and irritants, and regular inhalation is linked to chronic bronchitis symptoms and airway inflammation. People with asthma, COPD, or a history of lung injury face higher risk at any temperature. If you have ongoing cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain after dabbing, stop and see a clinician.
