The short answer
A cannabis anxiety attack ends. Inhaled THC peaks in 15 to 30 minutes and settles in 1 to 2 hours. Edibles run longer: onset at 30 to 120 minutes, peak at 2 to 4 hours, tail up to 6 to 8 hours. You cannot flush THC out. You wait, and you stop adding more.
First 10 minutes
- Stop dosing. Put down the pen, joint, or gummy.
- Sit up. Back against a wall, feet on the floor. Lying flat makes heart rate sensations louder.
- Breathe out longer than you breathe in. Inhale 4 seconds, exhale 6 to 8 seconds. Ten cycles.
- Drink 8 to 12 ounces of water. Cottonmouth and dry throat read as tightness to the brain.
- Eat starch or sugar if you skipped a meal. Low blood sugar copies panic: shakes, sweats, pulse of 100 or more.
- Move to dim light and low noise. One person, one room.
- Do not drive. Do not ride a bike.
What your body is doing
THC binds CB1 receptors and pushes the sympathetic nervous system. Heart rate can climb 20 to 50 beats per minute. Blood pressure sometimes drops, which causes dizziness when you stand. Time is the treatment. No home remedy reverses THC.
Things that may help, with limits
- CBD. Some studies show CBD blunts THC effects. Results are mixed and dose dependent. It is not a rescue drug.
- Black pepper. Caryophyllene acts on CB2 receptors in lab work. Human data is thin. Chewing 2 or 3 peppercorns is harmless if you want to try it.
- Lemon peel or citrus smell. Limonene is studied in animals. No human trial backs it for a panic reaction.
Call 911 if you see
- Chest pain, pressure, or pain in the jaw or left arm
- Fainting or no response to your voice
- Seizure
- Resting heart rate above 150 for more than 15 minutes
- Vomiting that will not stop, or vomiting with hot showers for hours, a sign of cannabinoid hyperemesis
- Hallucinations, confusion, or talk of self-harm
- Any child who ate an edible, at any dose
Do not
- Take more cannabis to balance the high.
- Drink alcohol.
- Mix in stimulants.
- Take someone else's pills. ER staff treat severe cases with benzodiazepines under monitoring.
How convenience raises the odds
Cheap, fast formats concentrate THC. A vape pen delivers a large dose per puff with no visible burn, so users lose count. Single-serve packaging removes the pause that rolling a joint creates. A 100 mg chocolate bar is 10 doses. Buyers eat the bar. Carts and pre-rolls hit 20 to 30 percent THC, several times the level of cannabis from 1990.
Lower-risk use next time
- Start at 2.5 mg THC if you are new or returning after a break.
- Wait 15 minutes after inhaling, 2 hours after eating, before another dose.
- Choose a 1:1 THC to CBD ratio.
- Track product, milligrams, and time in a phone note.
- Skip use during a panic disorder flare.
