Short answer
No. Four hours is not a reliable cutoff. Impairment from smoked cannabis peaks within 15 to 30 minutes and can last 2 to 4 hours or longer, depending on dose, THC concentration, tolerance, and body weight. Some people feel clear at hour three. Others are still impaired at hour five. Feeling normal is not proof that you are safe to drive.
Why a clock alone cannot answer this
Smoking sends THC to the brain fast, so effects arrive in minutes. How long they last depends on how much you smoked, the potency of the product, how often you use cannabis, and whether alcohol was involved. Alcohol plus cannabis is worse than either one alone. Edibles take longer to hit and can impair you for 6 hours or more, so the four hour rule almost never applies to them.
Blood THC also does not track impairment well. THC stays detectable in blood for hours and in urine for days after the high has passed. A test result does not tell you whether you can drive right now.
Cannabis DUI Detection Time Frame Guide
How to decide whether to drive
- Wait until every effect is gone: no euphoria, no slowed thinking, no heavy eyelids.
- Test yourself on a basic task: follow a conversation, do mental math, and track a moving object without effort.
- Add two more hours to your own estimate. People underrate their own impairment.
- Skip the drive if you drank any alcohol or took another drug with the cannabis.
- Call a rideshare, taxi, or sober friend when the answer is unclear.
Legal reality in the US
Every state treats driving under the influence of cannabis as a DUI or a DUI-equivalent offense. Some states set a per se blood THC limit, often 5 ng/mL, while others rely on officer observation and field sobriety tests. A medical cannabis card does not shield you from a DUI charge. In many states, an officer can arrest you based on observed impairment even when your blood result is low.
How Long Does Cannabis Impair Driving Ability?
Safer default
Do not smoke and drive on the same day. If you use cannabis in the evening, do not assume you are clear by morning. Line up your ride before you use, not after.
