Convenience is not the deciding factor. A California dispensary map shows where a shop can hold a state license and a local permit. Convenience decides which of those shops a customer picks. It does not decide which shops exist.
What a dispensary map is built from
Map layers come from public records. The base layer is the Department of Cannabis Control licensee list. A shop needs an annual storefront retailer license, a street address and an active status. Then come city or county permits. Then suspensions, which remove a shop from the list. Delivery-only licensees hold no storefront. A map that skips the license layer shows shops that cannot sell under state law.

License status comes first
A pin on a commercial map is a claim, not a record. Check three fields: license number, license type, status. Storefront retailer is the type that allows walk-in sales. Microbusiness and delivery types carry other rules. The count of active storefront licenses moves week to week as the state issues, renews and revokes them.

Local bans set the empty spaces
Proposition 64 passed in 2016 with 57% of the vote. The same law let each city and county ban storefront retail inside its borders. Most of the state's 482 cities and 58 counties do not allow it. That fact explains the shape of the map: dense clusters in a few regions, long gaps elsewhere. Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento and the Coachella Valley hold large clusters. Much of the Central Valley, the Sierra foothills and many suburban cities hold none.

Delivery covers part of the gap
Delivery licensees can reach addresses in places with no storefront, subject to state rules and local limits. A map that shows only shops undercounts access. Check four items before you order: delivery zone, minimum order, delivery fee, hours.
How to read a map before you drive
- Find the license number on the shop's listing. Search it on the state licensee lookup.
- Match the address on the license to the address on the map.
- Check the shop's posted hours. Map data goes stale.
- Check the city permit. A state license does not override a local ban.
- Compare pickup, curbside and delivery. Time and fee differ by shop.
Where convenience decides the pick
Among licensed shops inside a 15 minute drive, stock and price decide most of the choice. Order ahead, parking, line length and closing time move it further. For delivery, the choice moves to a screen. Distance still matters, but the fee and the minimum order matter more.
Two numbers are worth a check on any map: the license status date and the last update date of the pin. If either is missing, treat the listing as unconfirmed.
