Where Both Come From
Trichomes are the tiny resin glands on cannabis flowers. They hold most of the cannabinoids and terpenes in the plant. Kief and bubble hash are both concentrated trichome material. What Kief Is
Kief is dry sift. It collects at the bottom of a grinder, in a trim bin, or on any screen fine enough to let resin heads pass while holding back plant material. Because the process is mechanical and dry, kief keeps its natural sandy texture. It is a mix of intact trichome heads, broken heads, and some fine plant dust. Kief is easy to make and easy to top a bowl with, but it is not sorted by size.
What Bubble Hash Is
Bubble hash, also called ice water hash or water hash, uses cold water and agitation to knock trichomes off plant material, then a stack of filter bags to catch them by size. The bags are rated in microns, so each bag yields a different grade. The top grades are mostly whole trichome heads and look like pale sand. Lower grades carry more plant matter and look greener.

Making Bubble Hash: Steps
- Chill the plant material and a large volume of water with ice for at least 30 minutes.
- Line a bucket with the filter bags in descending micron order, coarsest on top.
- Add the chilled material and ice to the top bag.
- Agitate the mixture with a paddle for 15 to 20 minutes without shredding the plant matter.
- Let the mixture settle for 10 minutes so the trichomes sink.
- Pull each bag one at a time and let it drain over the bucket.
- Scrape the collected resin from each screen onto parchment with a spoon or card.
- Dry the hash on a screen in a cool, dark room until it stops feeling damp.

Storage
Both degrade with air, light, and heat. Keep each in an airtight glass jar in a cool, dark place. Kief holds its texture well when dry. Bubble hash that is not fully dried will mold, so cure it completely before sealing the jar.
