The short answer
Dry sift wins on convenience. One screen, frozen trim, and a card gets you hash in under 30 minutes. Bubble hash needs ice, water, a bag stack, 45 to 90 minutes of agitation, and 1 to 3 days of drying. Dry sift also holds more terpenes because water never touches the resin.
Bubble hash wins on cleanliness. Cold water and mesh bags strip leaf and stalk and push the product toward full melt. Dry sift carries more plant matter unless you add a static step.
How dry sift works
Dry sift is mechanical. Trichome heads break off frozen or room-temp cannabis and fall through a screen. Mesh size sets the grade.
- 60 to 90 micron: top grade, near full melt
- 90 to 150 micron: standard kief, good for pressing
- 150 micron and up: plant matter, food grade
Tools: one screen and 10 to 20 minutes. A grinder with a kief catcher does the same job at no extra cost.
How bubble hash works
Bubble hash uses ice water and a stacked bag set. Agitation knocks trichomes loose. Water carries them through the mesh. Bags sort the material by size, from 220 micron down to 25 micron.
- 220 and 190 micron: work bag, low grade
- 160 and 120 micron: mid grade
- 90, 73 and 45 micron: top grade
Then it must dry. Wet hash in a sealed jar grows mold. Most people dry 1 to 3 days at 60 F to 70 F and 50% relative humidity. That wait is the convenience cost.

Then pick bubble hash if
- You have volume. A pound of trim justifies the bag set and the dry time.
- You want full melt. Water separation gets closer to pure trichome heads.
- You want hash rosin. Bubble hash presses at lower temps and yields cleaner rosin.
- You can hold the room at 60 F to 70 F and low humidity.
A 4-bag set runs $40 to $120. Neither method includes a rosin press, which starts near $200.
One gap in the data: head-to-head lab tests on terpene retention for these two methods are thin. The terpene claim rests on process logic, not published trials.
