The pick: bong hits

A bong wins on dose control and on smoke that reaches the lungs. One bowl holds 0.1 g to 0.3 g of ground flower. The user pulls the whole hit in one draw. Nothing burns between hits. A joint burns from light to roach, and the smoke that leaves the cherry between puffs never reaches the user.

how much water to put in a bong

Load time for a bong is about 30 seconds with ground flower and a clean screen. Repeat that per bowl. A 0.5 g joint takes 5 to 10 minutes to smoke and cannot be paused without waste.

How different, by the numbers

  • Flower per session: bong bowl 0.1 g to 0.3 g; joint 0.5 g to 1 g; preroll 0.5 g or 1 g.
  • Draws: a bong bowl is 1 to 3 draws. A joint is 10 to 20 puffs.
  • Heat: both rely on combustion. The cherry of a joint sits above 500 C. Water in a bong cools the smoke before it reaches the mouth. The water does not stop combustion.
  • Filtration: water traps some particulate and some water-soluble gas. THC is not water soluble. Lab work on water pipes shows a drop in some gas-phase compounds and a change in the tar-to-THC ratio.
  • Odor: a joint leaves sidestream smoke in the room. A bong holds smoke in the tube until the pull. Both smell.

Where the joint wins

Portability. A joint needs a lighter and nothing else. No water, no glass, no cleaning. A bong needs a flat surface, water at the right level, and a case for transport. Glass breaks. Bong water grows bacteria in 1 to 2 days, so the water gets changed each day and the glass gets cleaned with 91% isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt.

Cost of entry: papers cost $3 to $5 for a pack. A glass bong costs $40 to $150.

Options ranked for convenience

  1. 12 in beaker bong, 3 mm glass, $40 to $90. One person, small bowl, sits on a desk.
  2. 18 in straight tube with an ice pinch, $60 to $150. More volume per hit, more cooling, less portable.
  3. Silicone bong, $30 to $60. Survives a drop, cleans less well than glass.
  4. 0.5 g preroll, $8 to $15. Zero gear, one session, no cleanup beyond ash.
  5. 1 1/4 papers and a pack of tips, $3 to $5. Roll 0.5 g, carry a lighter.

What the data does not settle

No public study gives one THC transfer number for bong hits or for joints. Smoke loss depends on the pull, the pack, the paper, and the cherry. Treat per-gram claims as estimates.
