How to compare dispensary job markets
Four numbers decide which state pays a budtender well. Store count. License caps. Entry wage against rent. Delivery and pickup rules.
Convenience reshaped the last number. Online ordering, curbside pickup and delivery moved work from the counter to the back room and the driver seat. States that license delivery created a second job category.
The pick: Michigan
Michigan had about 700 licensed adult-use dispensaries in 2024. Store density keeps hiring steady. Budtender pay runs $15 to $18 an hour plus tips. Rent sits below the national median in most metro areas outside Ann Arbor and the Detroit core.
Michigan issues delivery licenses across the state. That adds driver jobs at $15 to $20 an hour plus mileage. The state sets no cap on retail licenses, so store counts keep climbing.
Option 2: Colorado
Colorado opened adult-use sales in January 2014 and holds about 700 retail stores. Pay runs $16 to $18 an hour. Denver rent runs above the national median. Turnover is high because the market is mature and store count is flat.
Option 3: Illinois
Illinois pays the most for entry work: $17 to $20 an hour in Chicago. The catch is license count. The state capped retail licenses, so fewer than 200 stores operate in the state. Openings are scarce. Competition for each slot is heavy.
Option 4: Oklahoma
Oklahoma has more dispensaries per person than any other state. Store counts passed 2,000 at the 2022 peak. Medical cards cover the whole market. Pay is low, $12 to $14 an hour, and cost of living is low too. Retail jobs here are easy to get and hard to keep.
Option 5: California
California holds the largest legal market and more than 1,000 licensed retailers. Budtender pay runs $17 to $19 an hour. Rent in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego eats that gap. Delivery licenses cover the whole state and driver shifts are common.
Convenience shifts the job mix
Delivery orders cut counter traffic. Shops that run delivery keep fewer budtenders per store and more drivers and packers. Curbside pickup added a role that mixes inventory work with customer service. A store with strong online sales may hire two drivers for every three budtenders.
